Saltwater and inshore fishing rewards a longer hull that tracks and handles chop, plus corrosion-resistant hardware. Look for boats their makers explicitly rate for ocean or coastal use — we ranked those on stability and capacity, and flagged the ones with the range for open water.

12–14 feet tracks straighter and covers water faster against wind and current than a short rec hull — worth it inshore and in the surf zone.
Salt eats hardware. Favor boats and accessories with stainless or sealed fittings, and rinse everything after every trip.
You want enough beam to stay planted in boat wakes and wind chop, without going so wide that you fight to make distance.
Frequently asked questions
Physically yes, but not every hull is designed for it. For inshore and coastal fishing, choose a boat the manufacturer rates for ocean use — longer for tracking, stable in chop — and always rinse salt off the hull and hardware afterward.
12 to 14 feet is the inshore sweet spot: long enough to track and cover water against wind and tide, short enough to stay maneuverable. Shorter boats work in sheltered bays; the surf zone and open water reward length.
Sit-on-top, almost always. It is self-draining, easy to re-enter if you come off, and more stable for fishing — all critical when there is chop and no dock nearby.
